American Atheists Want to Ban Cross from 9/11 Memorial Museum - My Thoughts

http://www.christianpost.com/news/atheists-want-cross-removed-from-ground-zero-museum-52837/

I recently read this article about how the American Atheists have been making stands against religious displays around the country.

This article is mainly about how they do not want to have displayed in the 9/11 Memorial Museum, a cross made of steel beams that was left erect after the world trade center towers fell.

This cross was left standing and was not created or welded. During the time of the search and rescue and after, it was a source of encouragement for people who were a part of that effort.

They also have appealed for the removal of a street sign that says, "Seven in Heaven Way," honoring seven firefighters killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

There is also a different lawsuit filed by the atheist group that seeks the removal of roadside crosses honoring fallen Utah state troopers. A federal court ruled in favor of the crosses but an appeals court ruled against them.

My questions is simply, why does this group feel like they must go to the farthest corners of the Earth to remove every ounce of the God they don't acknowledge?

I'm well aware of the laws concerning the separation of church and state but I feel like this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Is displaying a cross somewhere honestly encroaching on others religious liberties? Are we somehow compelled and not able to rise above the compulsion to come to Christ at the sight of a cross? It seems like one could just look away or chose to disagree quietly?

Why does there have to be such a huge fuss to take away any part of anyone's religion that even partially doesn't agree with someone?

Our society has become far too concerned with providing the so called "rights" of the individual that we are all tied up in knots. You just can't please everyone.

We outlaw things like the ten commandments and crosses while teaching our children in schools a scientific philosophy that will ultimately lead to moral decay and social breakdown.

Why do the American Atheists feel so compelled to be liberated from this Jesus they say was a broke peasant? Or didn't even exist?

It seems that The American Atheists are angry that we would want to display the cross. Angry that we would want to bring our belief about God out in public. As though we could somehow take something as huge as God and shove him in the closet.

I understand that people want to separate church and state to be "fair" to people of all beliefs. And I think that is fine.

And I don't think that a school or state institution should push any one philosophy or religious belief. Even though our current U.S government and schools push the philosophy of materialist naturalism without any alternatives.

This conflict represents an ongoing personal dilemma that has raged since the first persons. Should I bend my knee to the creator or should I be my own God?

Those who decide they are fit to be their own God feel much frustration towards anyone who might disagree or attempt to take their right to rule.

If you want to live your life not acknowledging the Creator, that is your choice. I think it is a bad one, but I won't force you to change your mind.

However, I do think that when bringing the Constitution and rights given by the government into the conversation, The American Atheists should remember that this country that allows them such religious freedom that they can reject God openly was built on the backs of Christian theists who believed they had been "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights."

The tolerance that should be permitted towards Atheists is the same that should be given towards Christians. Christians don't seem to be scouring the country trying to remove all signs of other religions from the world? Why should the Atheist communities be allowed?

When it comes down to it- we have to separate church and state so as not to offend people. And we are certainly a nation of easily offended people.
